Jesus said "The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath" Mark 2 v 27 | This is a fact, which can be witnessed throughout the world, covering many areas of life. It is seen in international as well as in national issues. To illustrate this I came across the following:
SHOPPING DISPUTE Shopkeepers in a Wearside retail complex are furious about being forced to work every Sunday, and at the same time face an increase in rent. According to the local ‘Echo’, the Anglo-French company, Geraud UK Ltd, have been accused of bullying landlords by making them open on a Sunday. One trader is considering moving out after the Sunday order was given. The traders were not consulted by Geraud before being told they must open from 10.00am to 4.00pm from October 2006. Because they do not have a trade union, shopkeepers are unable to do anything about it. Some are small, one-person businesses and they say Sunday opening means they never get a day off with their families. One trader told the local paper, ‘You speak against them and you’re out. You sign a six month contract and that’s what you’ve got. Upset them, and that’s the end of your contract.’ As in this case, there are times when the powerful seem to succeed, but not always. There are occasions when even governments and major companies are humbled. We witnessed this only last year when plans by the Government and major supermarkets, to open their stores 24/7 were dealt a severe blow. May that result give us encouragement for the future.
